Natan Oster grew up in New York City having attended public schools and the International Center of Photography. He graduated from Oberlin College with a major in Visual Arts under the mentorship of photographer Pipo Nguyen-duy. Trained as a traditional darkroom printer, Natan’s work spans Intaglio and Lithographic printmaking as well as installation.
Born to an Israeli father and American Jewish mother, much of Natan’s installation work focuses on his complex relationship with histories of trauma and the link between collective identities of Holocaust Survivors and Palestinian survivors of the Nakba. The intensity of the ongoing conflict and occupation, as well as Natan’s ancestral connection to the colonial present and legacy, drive his work and force him to interrogate issues of historical memory from within his own community.
